The Evoke Experience: How to achieve those candid photos we all love!

Stacy here, and I’m a huge believer and admirer of authentic moments on a wedding day. Genuine AND believable images are what I desire to give our couples. A glance, a smile, a unexpected hug, a high five, a chest bump, you name it! These are the things that make the small things add up to the big memories on a wedding day.

One of my favorite feedbacks received from a past couple was just after they viewed their wedding gallery. It was from the bride when she looked through the photos:

“I’ve never seen the way he looks at me like that before.”

Caught in the moment, not posed, not forced. Just walking together from one photo op spot to another, the groom was lovingly looking at his new bride with his face and heart full of joy. Natural moments that unfold before the camera are my favorite.

What goes into our approach on a wedding day is a a lot of intuition, awareness and heartfelt observation. It’s the extra time and care that we take with our couples on the wedding day. There can be so many moving parts on a wedding day timeline, but myself and our team never rushes, never pressures, never pushes. Our philosophy is always that people come before any ‘pose’ ever will.

Here are three helpful suggestions on how to organize your wedding day schedule to create an atmosphere that is perfect for capturing candid moments in photography:

  • Spend as much time together as possible throughout the wedding day. This will allow us to capture those spontaneous, unscripted moments together. By staying close and engaging with each other, you are more likely to have genuine smiles, relaxed body language, and natural expressions that make for beautiful photo art.
  • Create intentional interactive events or special moments throughout the wedding day. For example, sharing a special bottle of whiskey, or making it over to the photo booth with your friends. A special time honoring your grandparents by sitting with them at the reception and loving on them! Trust your photographer to go capture these authentic moments that are both genuine and candid.
  • Embrace hugs and celebrations with your loved ones immediately following the ceremony. These heartfelt images of your family members congratulating you right after the ceremony are SO authentic and emotional. Don’t shy away from sharing these special moments with those closest to you. Consider informing them of your whereabouts while you wait for guests to move on to the cocktail hour.
  • Set aside a few moments for just the two of you to enjoy. Plan a peaceful moment in your timeline to enjoy each other’s company as newlyweds. This could involve sharing some hors d’oeuvres and favorite drinks together shortly after the ceremony, creating a brief but meaningful opportunity to relax, connect, and cherish a quiet moment together before proceeding with the rest of the schedule.

Remember, this marks the beginning of your marriage, so cherish these core memories together. You won’t regret making time for the things that matter on the big day!
