I still remember the first time I stepped in front of a camera—not as a photographer, but as someone being photographed. My heart raced, my smile felt awkward, and I wondered, “Will this feel natural? Will they get my best angles?”
That’s why, when we guide our couples through their engagement session, we think of every little detail that makes the process feel effortless, fun, and full of connection. Here’s my personal guide—straight from my experience and my heart—to help you look and feel amazing while capturing this beautiful chapter of your story.

1. Timing & Light – Chasing That Golden Glow
Timing is everything when it comes to dreamy images. I love scheduling sessions about an hour before sunset—that magical golden hour when the light is soft, romantic, and flattering. Sessions typically last an hour, so punctuality helps us maximize that glow.
You can plan your session anytime from right after your proposal to a few months before your wedding. I’ll work with your timeline to make sure everything flows smoothly.
2. Save-the-Date Timing – Give Yourself Breathing Room
If you’re using your engagement photos for save-the-dates, I recommend booking your session at least two months before you need to mail them. This gives us time for editing, designing, and printing—without any stress. Refer to your planner’s advice, but it’s common to send save-the-dates about 8 – 10 months out for any type or size of wedding you may be planning.
3. Choosing Your Location – Let It Reflect You
I always encourage couples to pick a spot that feels like them. Some of my favorite Lakeland locations include Bonnet Spring Park, Hollis Gardens, Lake Mirror Promenade, and Downtown Lakeland.
If you’re feeling adventurous, we can explore Central Florida spots like St. Augustine, Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, or even Anna Maria Bean Point for beachy vibes. Want something extra unique? Think rooftops, boats, or even a cozy cooking class session—let’s dream it up together.

4. What to Wear – Comfort & Confidence First
Your outfits should feel like you—just a little elevated. I suggest bringing two: one more formal and one more casual.
- For her: Flowy dresses, lace, or soft tulle photograph beautifully.
- For him: Dark button-downs and slacks always work, and adding layers like a blazer or suspenders adds dimension. (Skip plain white shirts—they tend to reflect too much light.)
Accessories like hats, statement necklaces, or sunglasses can add fun variety. Above all, wear something you feel amazing in—that confidence will shine through every image.
5. Hair, Makeup & Nails – Little Touches, Big Impact
Your engagement session is the perfect time to try your wedding day hair and makeup. It helps you see how it photographs—and gives you an extra boost of confidence.
Pro tip: keep nails clean and simple. We’ll likely capture some close-up shots of your hands and that beautiful ring.
6. Props – Keep It Personal
Props are a wonderful way to tell your story, but I recommend keeping them meaningful—think a favorite blanket, a bottle of champagne, or coffee mugs from your first date. And don’t forget to give your ring a quick clean so it sparkles in close-ups! I recommend bringing sunglasses for the fun direct-flash style photos too!

7. Posing – Real Moments, Real Emotions
Here’s a little secret: the best images often come from the in-between moments—the laughter after a “silly” prompt, the way your hands find each other naturally. I’ll guide you every step of the way so you never feel stiff or unsure. Try not to look at the camera unless you’re asked to! And keep the freedom rolling throughout your interactions with one another – think of it more like a slow motion movie vs. a stiff static pose.
And when the session’s done, why not turn it into a date night? Go out for dinner, grab drinks, or celebrate in your own special way. You’ll already be dressed up and glowing.
8. Photo Delivery – The Best Part
I’ll spend the next 2–3 weeks editing your gallery with so much care. When it’s ready, you’ll have a collection of images that feel like a love letter to this beautiful season of your life.

From My Heart to Yours
I know being in front of the camera can feel vulnerable—but I promise, it’s also free flowing, playful, and deeply meaningful. My goal is to make sure you leave your session not only with stunning images but also with the memory of an experience that felt entirely yours.
Let’s create something beautiful together—photos that will whisper “this is us” for years to come.
